Back Pain Blues
Self employed entrepreneurs, business leaders, consultants and project managers need to maintain postural strength and prevent back pain at all costs. Back pain can lead to loss of income and business opportunities.
Back pain is a very common problem. It will affect 9 out of 10 of us at some point in our lives. It is usually caused by a simple muscle, tendon or ligament strain and is not usually a serious problem. This is acute back pain, where the pain starts quickly but then reduces after a few days or weeks.
Chronic back pain, might last on and off for several weeks or even months and in some cases many years.
Back pain can be caused by lifting, over reaching, twisting or sporting injuries.
There has been a massive increase in back pain caused by changes in the way we work. Different workspaces, working from home, carrying heavy laptops and poor workstations designed for multiple users are some of the causes.
Symptoms will usually include muscle spasm, pain, and restricted movement. Over compensation, once we are suffering from back pain, can also lead to pain or injury in other areas. The neck, forearms and shoulders are some of the most common areas to suffer from this knock-on effect.
When we suffer back pain the soft tissues, muscles, tendons and ligaments in the lower lumbar area or upper back, tighten to prevent further damage. Inflammation will then build up as part of the natural healing process. If the pain is originating from the joints underlying the muscles the pain can be severe and the treatment lengthy.
Unfortunately most people only address back pain once they have it. Ice packs, heat packs, acupuncture, pain medication, physiotherapy and complete rest are some of the treatments.
Like many things in life, the best cure is prevention. This means we are part of the decision making process in regards to our own health. This should start when we are well, not when we are ill or injured.
In regards to back pain the best prevention is exercise tailored specifically to increase our core strength. This strengthens the muscles that support and align the spine, creating high levels of postural strength.
Exercise also boosts our mood, relieves stress and combats diseases, including high blood pressure.
One of the reasons we invented the Rooboard was to make improvements in core strength simple, time efficient and cost effective. The Rooboard is small but unbreakable, you can exercise at home, the gym or in the office, as many Londoners are now doing. 10 minutes a day is all that is required to develop incredible core strength and postural balance.
The second generation Rooboard is also available on Kickstarter with some very special offers for the next few days.
